Where Fashion Careers Begin
We aim to provide each student with personalised attention to equip them with the skills and practical experience in the process from concept to design and execution.
Personalised attention to individual students in the small tutor to student ratio is vital to the philosophy of the Academy
Our Goal –
Is to provide a place where students can experiment and develop their own identity.
Teaching and Learning Strategies
Since 2005 New Zealand Academy of Fashion Design has been training individuals who want to enter the fashion industry or become fashion-design entrepreneurs. In 2008 we were fortunate to be awarded the
PAA\VQ-SET Centre Approval to deliver the Diploma in Apparel Product Development, Level 3. Our students have gone onto further careers in the fashion industry, both here and abroad with strong practical skills.
However the qualification was discontinued world wide in 2015 and based on the same principals we created a practical course to give New Zealand students the technical skills they need.
Apparel Creation and Development
Our teaching and learning strategy has been developed by the idea that teaching and learning should be reciprocal. The tutors aim to provide learning and teaching that is relevant and holistic. Learners are taught a practical skill, then they are guided as to the why, how, when and where to apply it. Learners are challenged and stretched throughout the course in order to grow.
They are then required to complete the challenge through self-direction, exploration and guidance from a tutor. Tasks are designed to promote creative learning, encourage new skills and endorse informed and relevant choices.
Sunita Ovely is the Managing Director of NZ Academy of Fashion. Her involvement with the fashion industry began as a student in India. She acquired a Diploma in Fashion Design and trained as an apprentice with a celebrated Indian designer best known for his work in the Indian Cinema. In NZ she undertook studies at what was the Finishing Touches Academy of Fashion and Design and grew even more passionate about fashion and design. Sunita constantly encourages others to achieve their true potential through sharing her knowledge about fashion and design. Contact Sunita on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Pamela Bestwick comes from an IT, systems and processes background and brings this knowledge to the running of the Academy. Her interest in garment construction began at an early age, with costume design for others and wanting her own individual style. Pam loves seeing the inspiration of students being bought to fruition at the Academy.
Our students come from all walks of life; some have gone on to have careers in fashion, some have improved their skills for their own satisfaction. What is your reason for studying fashion?
